Therapy for your Hospital Stay

Acute Physical and Occupational Therapy services are provided in the patient’s room immediately following a surgery or an illness. Our therapy staff, with extensive skills and experience, use a variety of clinical interventions to assist in the patient’s return to the highest level of function possible in the acute care hospital. Therapists utilize a team approach working with nursing, physicians and other disciplines to get patients up and moving sooner and decrease their time in the hospital.

Occupational Therapists Focus on Improving Function & Independence in Daily Living Skills

Our licensed Occupational Therapists
provide these services...
  • Cardiac Rehab following open heart surgery
  • Help patients regain function after a major
    illness
  • Help children reach developmental milestones
  • Assists with adaptive equipment and devices
  • Fits patients with splints and positioners
  • Occupational Therapists (OT) evaluate and treat patients of all ages throughout the hospital to facilitate improvement of function so they can achieve maximum independence. OT issues adaptive equipment and recommends durable medical equipment (ADL) to ensure easier and safer activities of daily living. OT also fits patients with splints and positioners for prevention of joint deformity and to prevent contractures.

    You'll find OT involved in the cardiac rehab process following open heart surgery in the Levinson Heart Hospital. OT helps patients regain function after a major illness beginning with therapy in in the ICU and progressing with the patient until discharge.

    Children from birth to 18 years old receive help from OT in the Neonatal and Pediatric units so they can reach developmental milestones.

    Our Physical Therapists are very Diversified and Innovative with Multiple Specialties

    Physical Therapy at Chippenham Medical Center consists of physical therapists, physical therapy assistants and support technicians. Physical Therapists focus on function with re-training to walk, assessing for assistive devices, teaching joint protection; addressing balance issues and safety awareness with transfers. Specialty areas in addition to general medicine patients include Total Joint Replacement, post–operative spine surgeries, post-operative cardiac care in The Levinson Heart Hospital, ICU specialty programs, Pediatric and Pediatric Intensive care, Neonatal Intensive Care and psychiatric care is provided at the separate, on-campus facility, Tucker Pavilion.


    VitalStim® Therapy uses small
    electrical currents to stimulate
    swallowing muscles while trained
    specialists help patients re-educate
    their muscles through therapy
    with a licensed Speech Therapist.
    Wound Care services include inpatient and outpatient services. We treat a variety of wound diagnoses including but not limited to diabetic foot ulcers, arterial/venous ulcers, pressure ulcers and wounds caused by traumatic injury. We have staff that are nationally certified in wound care. Upon referral by a Physician, a physical therapist evaluates each wound and develops an Individualized treatment plan that takes into consideration the patient’s medical history as well as functional daily life.

    Acute Therapy at Chippenham also provides the following opportunities

    A team approach with quarterly rotations, allows the opportunity to focus on specialty areas. This provides enhanced professional development, relationship development, greater continuity of care and efficiency. Departmental and hospital program development and committees, monthly in-services and outside continuing education count toward contact hours needed for licensure.

    Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Speech Language Pathology

    Our licensed speech-language pathologists provide six days of acute care coverage. The therapists use highly specialized equipment such as a modified barium sallow studies, Fiber optic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and VitalStim Therapy to assess and treat swallowing disorders. The department offers a comprehensive range of services from NICU to the geriatric populations. Our speech-language pathologists are licensed by the state of Virginia and participate in continuing education to ensure state-of-the-art knowledgeable, skills and abilities.
